DIY Roof Rejuvenation Guide: Build Your Own Kit and Treat Your Shingles
This guide is for homeowners who want to treat their own asphalt shingle roof. DIY roof rejuvenation means spraying a diluted soy oil concentrate onto aging shingles so they soak the oils back in. It restores flexibility, reduces granule loss and helps shingles shed rain again. It’s the simplest form of DIY roof restoration: no tear-off, no coatings, just a measured spray on a clean, dry roof. Done right, it extends roof life 5+ years for a fraction of the cost of replacing the roof.
To be clear up front: SoyFuze doesn’t sell a boxed “DIY kit.” You buy SoyFuze concentrate, sized to your roof, and put the rest of the kit together yourself from gear you may already own. No sprayer is included with SoyFuze packs. The checklist below covers everything you need.
What you need: build your own DIY roof rejuvenation kit
- SoyFuze concentrate, sized to your roof. An 80% soy-based concentrate. One gallon mixes with water to make four gallons of ready-to-spray treatment. See the sizing table below.
- A sprayer. A basic pump-up garden sprayer works, and so does a battery or hand-pump backpack sprayer. A 12V pump sprayer lets you leave the tank on the ground and run a longer hose. For a pro-style setup, the SoyFuze Professional Spray Wand is sold separately from $134.99 (also available with a plug).
- Water and a mixing container. A clean 5-gallon bucket is enough for most jobs. A paddle mixer on a drill makes mixing faster.
- Roof safety gear. A fall-protection harness and anchor, soft-soled non-slip shoes, a secure ladder, gloves and safety glasses.
- A leaf blower or broom to clear leaves, debris, moss and dirt off the roof before you spray.
How much concentrate do you need?
The coverage math is simple:
- 1 gallon of concentrate makes 4 gallons of ready-to-spray (mixed) SoyFuze.
- Each mixed gallon covers about 100–150 sq ft, so each gallon of concentrate covers about 400–600 sq ft.
- Newer shingles still hold some of their natural oils, absorb less and reach the high end: about 150 sq ft per mixed gallon.
- Older, dried-out shingles absorb more. On an average 20-year-old roof, plan on about 100 sq ft per mixed gallon (400 sq ft per gallon of concentrate).
- A second treatment, about 5 years later, usually reaches the high end of the range.
| Size | Concentrate (makes) | Covers about | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sample | 32 fl oz (1 gal mixed) | 100–150 sq ft | $34.99 |
| 3-Pack | 3 gal (12 gal mixed) | 1,200–1,800 sq ft | $332 |
| 4-Pack | 4 gal (16 gal mixed) | 1,600–2,400 sq ft | $429 |
| 6-Pack | 6 gal (24 gal mixed) | 2,400–3,600 sq ft | $659 |
| 8-Pack | 8 gal (32 gal mixed) | 3,200–4,800 sq ft | $849 |
| 55-Gallon Drum (for pros) | 55 gal (220 gal mixed) | 22,000–33,000 sq ft | $2,950 + freight |
Example: a 2,000 sq ft roof needs about 3.3–5 gallons of concentrate, so a 4-Pack or 6-Pack. Pick the 6-Pack if your shingles are older and dried out. All packs ship free.
Not sure of your roof’s size? Follow our guide to measuring your roof with Google Earth. It covers the pitch adjustment too: a 6/12 roof has about 12% more surface than its flat footprint.
DIY roof rejuvenation in 3 steps
- Measure. Measure your roof’s square footage to see how much concentrate you need.
- Mix. Mix 1 part concentrate to 3 parts water. Pour the concentrate into the water, not the other way around. For example, put 3 gallons of water in a 5-gallon bucket, then slowly add 1 gallon of SoyFuze while stirring. If the mix sits for more than 30 minutes, stir it again before you spray.
- Plan and apply. Pick a day with no rain in the forecast for at least 24 hours after you spray. Light rain may be okay in some areas, but 24 dry hours is the safe plan. Spray evenly onto clean, dry shingles. Start at the bottom and work up so you don’t step on shingles you’ve already sprayed; freshly sprayed shingles can be slippery. Plan your last section so you finish at your ladder. Overlap your passes slightly and aim for an even, milky coat. A little run-down is fine, but anything running into the gutters is wasted.
SoyFuze absorbs in under an hour, then keeps working into the shingles, softening and restoring them. Stay off the roof for 48 hours after spraying. You’ll see the full result in about 3 days (72 hours).

Is DIY roof restoration right for you?
DIY roof restoration with SoyFuze is a good fit if:
- You have basic handyman skills and are comfortable working on a roof and a ladder.
- You have good balance and physical fitness.
- Your roof is walkable. Roofs under about 6/12 pitch are the best DIY candidates. Roofs over 8/12 should go to a pro.
- You can set aside a dry day for the job, plus 48 hours off the roof afterward.
Roof safety comes first
Before you start, read Is DIY roof restoration safe?
- Use a fall-protection harness and anchor.
- Follow ladder safety: correct angle, secure footing and 3-point contact.
- Wear soft-soled, non-slip shoes, gloves and safety glasses.
- Don’t work in rain, high wind or extreme temperatures.
- Never walk on freshly sprayed shingles.
- Stay off the roof for 48 hours after you spray.
- Always have a partner on site.
Common DIY roof rejuvenation mistakes to avoid
- Skipping the cleaning step before treatment.
- Mixing the concentrate stronger or weaker than 1:3.
- Uneven or incomplete coverage.
- Spraying on a wet roof or with rain in the forecast within 24 hours.
- Walking on the roof before 48 hours have passed.
- Ignoring safety precautions and fall protection.
What DIY roof rejuvenation costs vs. replacement
Treating your roof yourself costs about 18–28¢ per sq ft of roof in concentrate. For a typical home, that means a few hundred dollars for SoyFuze plus whatever sprayer and safety gear you don’t already own. That’s a small fraction of what a tear-off and new roof would cost. SoyFuze extends roof life 5+ years, so it’s a way to put off replacement, not a fix for a roof that’s already failing.

Rather have a pro do it?
DIY roof restoration isn’t for every roof or every homeowner. Hire a pro if your roof is steep (over 8/12), has a complicated layout with many valleys, or if heights, health or time rule out DIY. Our certified SoyFuze applicators apply it professionally. You get the same soy oil roof treatment without climbing a ladder.
Storing leftover concentrate
- Keep containers sealed, in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
- Protect from freezing and extreme heat.
- The concentrate has a shelf life of 2–3 years.
DIY roof rejuvenation FAQ
More questions about how SoyFuze works? See the SoyFuze FAQ.
Does SoyFuze sell a DIY roof rejuvenation kit?
No, not as a boxed kit. SoyFuze sells concentrate in packs sized to your roof. You add a sprayer, water, a mixing bucket and roof safety gear. No sprayer is included with SoyFuze packs, but you can buy the SoyFuze Professional Spray Wand separately or use a pump-up garden sprayer.
How much SoyFuze do I need for my roof?
Each gallon of concentrate makes 4 gallons of mixed SoyFuze, and each mixed gallon covers about 100–150 sq ft. A 2,000 sq ft roof needs about 3.3–5 gallons of concentrate, so a 4-Pack or 6-Pack. Older, drier shingles need the larger amount.
Can I use a regular garden sprayer?
Yes. A basic pump-up sprayer works; it just takes more refills and pumping on a big roof. Backpack sprayers and 12V pump sprayers make the job faster.
How long until I see results?
SoyFuze absorbs in under an hour and keeps working into the shingles. You’ll see the full result in about 3 days (72 hours). Pick a day with no rain in the forecast for at least 24 hours after you spray, and stay off the roof for 48 hours.
