Roof Inspection Before Rejuvenation: 6 Areas to Check Before a Soy Oil Roof Treatment

SoyFuze rejuvenates aging asphalt shingles. It soaks in, restores flexibility, and helps shingles shed water again. What it doesn’t do is repair the other parts of your roof: caulk, sealant, pipe boots, flashing, and roof cement. Most roof leaks start at flashing and penetrations, not in the field of shingles. If one of those parts was already failing, the first heavy rain after treatment is often when it shows up.

That’s why a 30-minute roof inspection before rejuvenation is the best thing you can do for a good result. Here’s exactly what to check before any soy oil roof treatment.

Roof inspection checklist: 6 areas to check before rejuvenation

  1. Pipe boots. Look at the rubber collars around plumbing vents. Cracked, shrunken, or split rubber is the most common leak point on an older roof. Boots are cheap and easy to replace.
  2. Flashing. Check the metal at chimneys, sidewalls, and skylights. Look for gaps, lifted edges, rust, or missing pieces.
  3. Vents. Box vents, ridge vents, and exhaust vents should be tight and secure, with no cracked housings or missing fasteners.
  4. Caulk and sealant beads. Old sealant dries out, shrinks, and pulls away. If it’s cracked or loose, scrape it out and reseal.
  5. Roof cement patches. Old patches can crack or separate. Repair anything that’s brittle or lifting.
  6. Damaged shingles and popped nails. Replace cracked, torn, or missing shingles and reset any nails that have backed out.

Bonus: check the attic. On a dry day, look for water stains, dark spots, or damp insulation under the roof deck. An existing stain means there’s an existing leak to fix before you treat.

During roof rejuvenation treatment

  • Protect other materials. Cover or spray around pipe boots, caulk beads, roof cement patches, skylights, and foam. Plant-oil rejuvenators can soften old roof cement and some rubber and sealants.
  • Mix 1:3. One part concentrate to three parts water. Apply one coat only.
  • Pick the right day. Shingles should be clean and dry, the temperature between 50 and 90°F, and no heavy rain forecast for 48 hours.
  • Let it soak in. Stay off the roof for 48 hours, and never rinse water over treated shingles.

After the first heavy rain: re-inspect your roof

Take a quick look in the attic and around penetrations after the first big storm. It’s an easy way to confirm that everything you repaired is holding.
